Billboard Bill Passes House - Tuscon Arizona

5/5/03

Monday, the state House approved a bill permitting them, provided they don't change their messages more than once every six seconds.
Some worry drivers will be distracted, and local astronomers say the message boards will contribute to light pollution.
"People come here for the nice nature, to get away from those kinds of things," says David Crawford of the International Dark Skies Association. "To see something like this is personally very disappointing. Those things that make for effective marketing are flashing in their eyes. Make it as bright as possible. Get their attention."
Supporters of the bill say it won't override local zoning laws designed to control billboards.
The bill now moves to the Senate, where a committee rejected similar legislation last month.
